Updated 7 October 2026.
AI SEO is the work of making your B2B brand easy for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI summaries to find, understand and recommend. It rests on the same foundations as good SEO, with more weight on plain language, direct answers, connected topics and sourced claims.
A consultant in London noticed something odd in their contact forms: new, well-qualified leads were writing “ChatGPT recommended you”. They had not set out to be visible in AI assistants. They had simply published clear, expert content that answered the questions their buyers asked.
That story is now common. In Forrester’s Buyers’ Journey Survey 2025, 94% of business buyers said they use AI somewhere in their purchasing process, up from 89% a year earlier, and twice as many named generative AI or conversational search as their most meaningful source of information (Forrester, 2025). If your brand is missing from those answers, you are missing from the shortlist.
AI SEO for B2B at a glance
- Test where you stand: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Claude the questions your buyers ask and note who gets named.
- Write in the language buyers use in meetings and emails, not in keyword strings.
- Turn headings into the questions clients ask, and answer each one in the first two sentences.
- Connect related pages so AI systems can see the full shape of your expertise.
- Source every statistic and name every expert. Unsupported claims are easy for AI systems to skip.
- Track AI referrals, “how did you hear about us” answers and brand mentions, not rankings alone.

Why AI SEO Matters for B2B Brands Now
B2B buyers do most of their research before they speak to anyone. The 6sense 2025 Buyer Experience Report found buyers first contact sellers about 61% of the way through their buying process, and 94% have already ranked their shortlist by then (6sense, 2025). AI assistants now do much of that early sorting.
The audience is large. OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users for ChatGPT in February 2026 (TechCrunch, 2026). At the same time, AI summaries are taking clicks from traditional results. When Google showed an AI summary, Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% when no summary appeared (Pew Research Center, 2025). Ahrefs found that an AI Overview now goes with a 58% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page (Ahrefs, 2026).
The traffic that does arrive from AI tends to be worth more. Semrush found the average visitor from an AI search source was 4.4 times as valuable as a traditional organic visitor, based on conversion rate (Semrush, 2025). Fewer visits, better visits: that is the trade AI search is making for B2B sites.
We saw this first-hand when strict keyword targeting was holding back client websites. When we moved to natural, semantic language backed by sound technical SEO, results followed. One consultant had their whole website rebuilt around this method, and within weeks of relaunch they were receiving referrals through ChatGPT search.
How AI Systems Choose What to Recommend
Traditional search matched pages to keywords. AI assistants work with meaning. Vector search finds content by semantic similarity rather than exact word matches (MongoDB), so a page can be found for a question it never phrases word for word. What decides whether you get named is how clearly your content explains what you do, who it helps and why it can be trusted.
In practice, AI systems favour content that:
- Answers a question directly, near the top, in plain language.
- Covers a topic in full, with related pages linked so the connections are obvious.
- Shows its working: named sources, dates, authors and real examples.
- Appears in more than one place: your site, directories, reviews, press and partner pages all agree about who you are.

A finance client active in the United States wanted to share expertise in a crowded space and benefit from both organic and AI discovery. By restructuring their content around topics and the relationships between them, rather than single keywords, they achieved both. Parent topics connected naturally to detailed service pages, which gave AI systems a clear map of what the firm knew.
Five AI SEO Tactics for B2B Content
1. Test your AI visibility today
Open ChatGPT and ask a question your buyers would ask, such as “[your service] providers for [your sector] in [your city]”. Repeat it in Perplexity, Gemini and Claude. Note who gets named, which sources are cited and what is said about you, if anything. The gaps show you where to start.
When we run this test for new clients, firms with strong traditional SEO are often surprised to find they barely appear. Our AI readiness check turns this into a structured review of your site.
2. Rewrite headings as client questions
Swap keyword-stuffed headings for the questions clients ask. Instead of “B2B Financial Services London”, try “How do B2B companies choose a financial services provider?” Then answer the question in the first two sentences under the heading.
A fintech consultancy active across Europe wanted to stand out in a noisy market. We found a content gap by rewriting their headings as real client questions. The result was content that ranked and also started sales conversations.
3. Build connected topic clusters
Stop listing services and start explaining problems. Link each detailed page to its parent topic and to related pages, and say how ideas connect (“this differs from a standard audit because…”). Our guide to B2B website structure shows how to plan this.
4. Make every claim checkable
Cite statistics with the source name and year, name your experts and show real examples. AI systems that check facts lean on content that is easy to verify. Our post on E-E-A-T and AI citations covers the trust signals that matter most, and schema markup helps machines read who you are.
5. Write specific, quotable sentences
Vague brand language gives an AI system nothing to repeat. Short, specific statements of what you do, for whom and with what result are much easier to quote. We explain this in Specific Enough to Be Quoted.
How to Track AI SEO Performance
AI visibility shows up in different signals from rankings. Watch for:
- AI referral traffic in GA4 from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and similar sources.
- Lead source answers: add AI assistants as an option to “How did you hear about us?”
- Mentions and citations: run the same set of buyer questions each month and record whether you are named and linked.
- Branded search and direct traffic: people who meet you in an AI answer often search for you by name afterwards.
Our step-by-step guide on how to track AI traffic shows how to set up the GA4 side. AI referral volume is still small next to Google for most B2B sites, so treat AI SEO as part of your search work, not a replacement for it.

Common Questions About AI SEO for B2B
What is the difference between AI SEO and traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO aims to rank pages for search terms. AI SEO aims to be understood, trusted and recommended by AI assistants and AI summaries. The foundations overlap (crawlable pages, clear structure, good content), but AI SEO puts more weight on plain-language answers, connected topics and sourced claims.
How do I get my B2B brand recommended by ChatGPT and Perplexity?
Answer the questions your buyers ask in plain language, cover each topic in full, link related pages, cite sources with dates and make sure other trusted sites describe you the same way. Then test regularly by asking the assistants those questions.
Does AI-generated content rank well in AI search?
Content written quickly by AI with no expert input tends to be generic, and generic content gives AI systems little reason to cite it. Expert insight, real examples and careful editing, with AI used to support the work, give you something worth quoting.
Should B2B companies stop doing traditional SEO?
No. Google still sends most search traffic to most B2B sites, and AI assistants draw on the same well-structured, crawlable content. Good AI SEO and good SEO reinforce each other.
How long does AI SEO take to work?
It varies with your starting point, competition and how often AI systems refresh their sources. Some changes, such as clearer answers on key pages, can be picked up within weeks; building wide recognition across AI assistants takes months of steady publishing.
